MotoCMS 3 End of Life: What Website Owners Should Do Next

If your business website is still running on MotoCMS 3, you may have already heard that the platform has reached the end of its product lifecycle.

MotoCMS officially states that MotoCMS 3 reached End of Life on July 1, 2025. The platform is now considered a discontinued legacy product and is no longer under active development. MotoCMS also states that it does not undertake to provide new features, regular development, compatibility updates or security updates for MotoCMS 3.

This does not mean that every MotoCMS 3 website suddenly stopped working on that date. Many existing websites can continue operating normally.

However, it does mean that website owners should start thinking seriously about the long-term future of their sites.

What Does “End of Life” Mean for MotoCMS 3?

End of Life, often abbreviated as EOL, means that the software has reached the end of its normal development and support lifecycle.

MotoCMS released MotoCMS 3.4.6 on May 1, 2025, describing it as the final version of the MotoCMS 3 product. That release focused on PHP 8.1 compatibility and bug fixes, while MotoCMS recommended Moto4 for new projects.

For an existing website owner, this means you may still be able to:

1. access your MotoCMS 3 website;
2. edit existing content;
3. use your existing template;
4. keep the site running on compatible hosting;
5. continue using your existing lifetime licence.

MotoCMS confirms that previously purchased perpetual/lifetime MotoCMS 3 licences do not automatically expire simply because the product reached End of Life.

The important difference is that you can no longer assume the platform will continue evolving alongside new web technologies.

Will My MotoCMS 3 Website Stop Working?

Not necessarily.

If your website is currently working correctly, there is no reason to panic or immediately take it offline.

A MotoCMS 3 website may continue working for a considerable period provided that its hosting environment, PHP configuration, database and other dependencies remain compatible.

The problem is future compatibility.

Hosting providers regularly update PHP versions, databases, SSL configurations, server software and security policies. Browsers and third-party services also continue changing.

MotoCMS specifically notes that a lifetime licence does not guarantee future compatibility with server software, browsers, PHP versions, databases or third-party technologies.

This is why an older website can work perfectly today but experience problems following a hosting or server change later.

What Are the Main Risks of Staying on MotoCMS 3?

There is nothing inherently wrong with continuing to operate a stable MotoCMS 3 website for the short term. However, website owners should understand the risks.

1. Future Hosting Compatibility

A hosting provider may eventually upgrade software that your MotoCMS 3 installation depends on.

This could cause:

1. admin-panel problems;
2. PHP errors;
3. broken functionality;
4. contact-form issues;
5. compatibility problems;
6. parts of the website to stop functioning.

MotoCMS's final MotoCMS 3 release specifically addressed PHP 8.1 compatibility, which demonstrates why server compatibility is an important consideration for older CMS platforms.

2. No Regular Future Development

MotoCMS 3 is no longer an actively developed product.

That means website owners should not expect ongoing feature development, regular compatibility improvements or the same development lifecycle available with a current platform.

3. Maintenance Can Become More Difficult

Older websites generally become harder to maintain over time.

A small issue that is easy to fix today can become more complicated when hosting environments or third-party integrations change.

4. Your Website Design May Also Be Aging

Many MotoCMS 3 websites were originally created several years ago.

Even if the CMS itself still works, the website may now need improvements in:

1. mobile presentation;
2. layout;
3. navigation;
4. content structure;
5. calls to action;
6. images;
7. user experience;
8. overall visual design.

This makes the End-of-Life period a good opportunity to evaluate the website as a whole rather than simply transferring the old design unchanged.

Should You Keep MotoCMS 3 or Migrate to Moto4?

There is no single answer for every website.

The right decision depends on the condition and importance of your current site.

Staying on MotoCMS 3 may make sense if:

1. your website is currently stable;
2. you rarely need to make changes;
3. all important functions are working;
4. your hosting environment remains compatible;
5. the website is not business-critical;
6. you are planning a redesign later anyway.

In this situation, you may choose to continue maintaining the existing site while preparing for a future migration.

Migration should become a priority if:

1. you are already experiencing technical issues;
2. your hosting environment is creating compatibility problems;
3. the design is outdated;
4. the site is difficult to maintain;
5. you need significant new functionality;
6. your business depends heavily on the website;
7. you are already planning a redesign.

For a business-critical website, waiting until the old website completely fails is generally not the best migration strategy.

What Is Moto4?

Moto4 is MotoCMS's current website-building platform.

MotoCMS recommends Moto4 for new projects and describes it as an all-in-one website builder incorporating the website editor, hosting, SSL, CDN infrastructure, software updates and technical support.

Moto4 also has its own current support documentation and development ecosystem rather than relying on the legacy MotoCMS 3 platform.

For an existing MotoCMS 3 owner, however, moving to Moto4 should normally be treated as a website migration project, not simply as clicking an “upgrade” button.

What Should You Do Before Migrating?

If you decide to move your MotoCMS 3 website to Moto4, avoid rebuilding it without first reviewing what already exists.

A proper migration should begin with an audit.

1. Back Up Your Existing Website

Before making major changes, keep a complete backup of the existing website and its important content.

Do not begin replacing or deleting the old website until the new version has been properly checked.

2. Review Existing Pages

Identify:

1. important pages;
2. service pages;
3. contact information;
4. blog articles;
5. images;
6. downloadable files;
7. forms;
8. existing URLs.

Not everything needs to be copied simply because it exists.

Migration is also an opportunity to remove outdated or unnecessary content.

3. Preserve Important URLs

If an important existing URL changes during redevelopment, it should be handled carefully.

Unnecessary URL changes can create broken links and affect existing search visibility.

Where URLs must change, appropriate redirects should be planned.

4. Review Existing Google Traffic

If the old website already receives traffic from Google, review the pages and search terms that currently generate impressions and clicks before rebuilding.

A migration should aim to preserve existing SEO value, not unintentionally erase it.

5. Choose a Suitable Moto4 Design

You do not necessarily need to recreate an old MotoCMS 3 design exactly.

In many cases it makes more sense to move the useful content into a modern Moto4 template and improve the website structure at the same time.

Should You Wait Until Your MotoCMS 3 Website Breaks?

I would not recommend that approach for an important business website.

A planned migration gives you time to:

1. select the right design;
2. organize existing content;
3. review SEO;
4. test the new website;
5. correct mobile issues;
6. check forms;
7. prepare redirects;
8. launch with less disruption.

An emergency migration after a website has already stopped working is usually more stressful and gives you fewer options.

If your MotoCMS 3 website is currently stable, that is actually a good time to plan the migration carefully rather than waiting for a technical problem.

What If You Are Not Ready to Migrate Yet?

Migration does not need to happen immediately in every case.

If you want to continue using your MotoCMS 3 website for now, consider having it reviewed periodically for:

1. errors;
2. hosting compatibility;
3. broken forms;
4. SSL problems;
5. mobile-display issues;
6. broken links;
7. functionality after server changes.

MotoCMS states that technical support and related services for MotoCMS 3 may still be provided on a paid basis after End of Life.

So End of Life should be viewed as a signal to plan, not as a reason to panic.
